Altar Service at St. George Greek Orthodox Church
"Serving with Reverence, Honor, and Faith”
The Altar Service at St. George Greek Orthodox Church provides young men with the sacred opportunity to assist the clergy during the Divine Liturgy and other liturgical services. As altar servers, they play an essential role in the worship experience, helping to maintain the order and beauty of Orthodox Christian traditions.
The Role of an Altar Server
Altar servers are entrusted with duties such as:
-
Assisting the priest during the Divine Liturgy, Holy Week, and feast day services
-
Carrying candles, fans, and crosses in processions
-
Preparing and organizing liturgical items for use at the altar
-
Participating in prayers and hymns to enhance their spiritual growth
Who Can Serve?
Boys and young men who are members of our parish and have been baptized in the Orthodox Christian faith are invited to serve. It is encouraged that they:
-
Demonstrate reverence and attentiveness during services
-
Arrive on time and dress appropriately in their vestments
-
Show respect to the clergy and fellow altar servers
-
Be willing to learn about Orthodox Christian worship and traditions
The Spiritual Benefit of Altar Service
Serving in the altar is more than just assisting the priest—it is a calling to grow in faith, discipline, and devotion. Through their service, young men deepen their understanding of Orthodox Christian worship, build friendships within the church, and strengthen their personal relationship with God.
