Holy Unction in the Greek Orthodox Church
What is Holy Unction?
Holy Unction (also called the Sacrament of Anointing) is a sacred Mystery of the Orthodox Church in which the faithful receive anointing with blessed oil for physical and spiritual healing. This sacrament is rooted in the scriptural teaching that the Church prays for the sick, anoints them with oil, and asks for God’s healing grace.
As the Apostle James writes:
“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15)
Holy Unction provides not only healing of body and soul but also forgiveness of sins for those who seek God’s mercy with repentance and faith.
The Purpose of Holy Unction
The Sacrament of Holy Unction is offered for:
-
Healing of physical illnesses and ailments
-
Spiritual healing and strength
-
Forgiveness of sins (especially for those who may not be able to confess due to serious illness)
-
Comfort and renewal of faith during times of suffering
While Holy Unction is often associated with severe illness or approaching death, it is not limited to those who are dying. Any Orthodox Christian who seeks healing and grace may receive this sacrament.
The Holy Unction Service
The service of Holy Unction is a deeply prayerful and solemn sacrament that includes:
-
Prayers for Healing – The priest prays for God’s mercy and healing for those present.
-
Scripture Readings – Seven passages from the Gospels and Epistles highlight Christ’s healing ministry.
-
Anointing with Holy Oil – The priest anoints the forehead, hands, and other parts of the body with blessed oil, invoking God’s healing grace.
-
Intercessory Prayers – The faithful join in prayer for those in need of healing.
The anointing is performed seven times, symbolizing the fullness of divine healing. The faithful are called to approach the sacrament with faith, humility, and a sincere desire for healing.
Who Can Receive Holy Unction?
Holy Unction is available to any Orthodox Christian in need of healing, including:
-
Those suffering from physical illness or pain
-
Those experiencing mental or emotional struggles
-
Those in need of spiritual renewal and strength
-
Those preparing for surgery or medical treatment
Holy Unction is not a substitute for Holy Confession. While it provides forgiveness of sins, Orthodox Christians should also seek the Sacrament of Confession for spiritual cleansing.
Holy Unction on Holy Wednesday
A special service of Holy Unction is offered in all Orthodox churches on Holy Wednesday during Holy Week. This tradition prepares the faithful spiritually and physically before entering the solemn days of Christ’s Passion, Crucifixion, and Resurrection.
Holy Unction for the Sick & Homebound
For those who are unable to attend church due to illness or infirmity, the priest can visit homes, hospitals, or nursing facilities to administer Holy Unction.
If you or a loved one are in need of Holy Unction at home, please contact the church office to arrange a visit.
